Change and the Individual
Introduction
Have you ever noticed that people react differently to change. Do some people seem more resistant to change than others?
Change messages are often constructed form the perspective of the strategic leader. Consequently an organisation may have a tendency to communicate 'the change' in a future focussed way rather than what the change means to the individual today.
We as individuals evaluate changes based upon how they affect us personally. However, when an individual is 'stuck' in the change process we continue to communicate the benefit of the change rather than addressing the obstacle.
You can facilitate the process of change by recognising where the individual is on 'the change curve' and providing the support and challenge to make them comfortable moving forward.
Intention
- To provide the coaching tools that can be used to help individuals respond positively to cultural change
Methodology
- Elicitation of current contexts and challenges
- Demonstration of contrasting effective/ineffective approaches to change
- Explicit input of the techniques for identifying resistance and moving beyond it
- Feedback and discussion in the context of further real scenarios
Explicit content/techniques
- Resourceful perceptions and approaches supported by conclusive psychological study
- Body language techniques to maintain a positive atmosphere around the interaction
- Investigative 'meta' questioning to discover the obstacles to change
- Linguistic 'framing' to guide individuals through the change curve quickly
Outcomes
- Utilise change models appropriate to your business
- Be pre-emptive in the way you prepare line managers to deal with change
- Be effective "situational" coaches - adaptive in your approach to different individual needs
Logistics
- This session can be run as a 180-minute 'nugget' or as a one-day training course
- We like to use two facilitators for the 'nugget' version of this session - optimum number of attendees is 12 the maximum is 24
- For an optimal training environment we prefer a theatre style room layout with plenty of room for participants to move around
- Equipment requirements are a flip chart (necessity) and a projector/screen (optional)
