Who is Dr John Grinder? By Swen Hollestelle

Dr. John Grinder is mentioned a few times on our noggin website so it's important to give you a very quick overview of who John Grinder is.

Born in 1940, John graduated from the University of San Francisco with a degree in Psychology and went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Cold War in Europe. In the late 1960's he entered the University of San Diego to complete a Ph.D. in Linguistics in 1972 after which he worked as an assistant professor at the University of California.

It was there that he was approached by Richard Bandler who asked for his help to model Gestalt Therapy. Together they went on to model the behavioural patterns of Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Milton Erickson under the guidance of Gregory Bateson. This forms the basis of what is now known as Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Bandler and Grinder travelled around for a few years delivering seminars and developing more patterns whilst sharing their skills with their delegates. In the 1980's they decided to both go their own way and John created New Code NLP with Judith DeLozier between 1982 and 1987 which he actively continues to develop with Carmen Bostic-St. Clair.

Daryll's methodology and thinking is heavily influenced by John; they met at one of the courses John delivers, kept in touch and John has provided the following endorsement to Daryll's book:

"Daryll Scott has managed something startling to me - in a strong clear voice, he has developed a description of the New Code NLP patterning that he has worked diligently to master - the patterning developed by Carmen Bostic St. Clair and myself - that is quite distinct from what I would have proposed.

It strikes me as working very nicely for the specific application that Daryll has in mind - namely, an introductory book on the New Code NLP that is designed primarily for business people.

There are many differences of perception that I could point to that distinguish Daryll's perceptions about New Code NLP from my own, however the point here is NOT uniformity but getting the message into the business community in an effective form. And in this, I judge Daryll's efforts to be very effective.

I welcome his contribution to the growing movement to position New Code NLP in the business community and in the larger context.
